| After 18 months in hibernation, Reggie the alligator resurfaced to a welcoming crowd of onlookers at Lake Machado in Harbor City, California. Newsvans were soon camped out alongside the water and reporters awaited any glimpse of the popular reptile. Helicopters circled overhead searching for his whereabouts. He appeared on April 30, 2007 and again on May 1, 2007.
Reggie was dumped in the lake by his owner after he got too big. He was first spotted in the lake in August 2005 and continued to be seen until October 2005, after which he disappeared. He eluded all efforts to trap or catch him. Steve Irwin had visited the lake and vowed to come back when Reggie resurfaced. Irwin died September 4, 2006 after being pierced in the heart by a stingray. His organization in Australia has been contacted to see if they want to still pursue helping to capture Reggie. Plans are to house him at the Los Angeles Zoo. Janice Hahn visited on April 30 and again on May 1 but wasn't able to spot the elusive Reggie. When questioned about whether Reggie could possibly stay at the Lake, she cited the dangers of having him there, but then reflected that maybe the public could be kept safe if they cordoned off one area for Reggie and kept the rest of it open. |
